5 Things You Didn’t Know About the Dengue Mosquito

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is notorious for spreading diseases like dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and oropouche. But there’s more to this mosquito than just its ability to transmit these illnesses. It’s actually quite an interesting creature! Here are five surprising facts you might not know about the Aedes aegypti

1. It loves urban areas - Unlike many mosquitoes that prefer rural settings, the Aedes aegypti thrives in cities. It can breed in small amounts of stagnant water, like in plant pots, tires, and even bottle caps. This makes it hard to control in densely populated areas. That’s why awareness campaigns and mosquito control measures, like sustainable traps, are so important to keep its numbers in check.

2. It doesn’t fly high - This mosquito isn’t a high-flyer—its flight typically stays under 1.5 meters. So, if you’re getting bitten on your legs and ankles, it’s because that’s usually where it’s hanging around.

3. It’s quiet but persistent - The Aedes aegypti mosquito is pretty discreet. You won’t hear its buzzing, which makes it easy to overlook. But it’s persistent—one female mosquito can bite multiple people in a short amount of time.

4. It has a strong sense of smell - This mosquito has a keen sense of smell and can actually remember the scent of its victims. If it bites you once, it’s likely to find you again. It’s particularly attracted to people who exhale more carbon dioxide, like adults, pregnant women, and those with a faster metabolism.

5. It’s originally from Egypt - The Aedes aegypti actually comes from Egypt, and it spread from Africa to other parts of the world. The name itself comes from its scientific classification—Culex aegypti—where Culex means “mosquito” and aegypti means “Egyptian.” So, it literally translates to “Egyptian mosquito.”

Understanding the behavior and characteristics of the Aedes aegypti helps us develop better strategies to control it. After all, fighting this mosquito is crucial to protecting our health and keeping the diseases it spreads under control.
